Home Care

Home care is a way of enabling people to remain living in their own home rather than moving into a residential or nursing home.  It provides personal care such as help getting in and out of bed, getting washed and undressed/dressed, and eating meals.  It can also provide help with collecting pensions, shopping, preparing meals and essential household hygiene.

The service is provided by Cumbria County Council who employ paid staff to visit clients in their own home.

What is Home Care?

Home care is provided to people in their own homes.  Its purpose is to help people remain living in their own home as an alternative to residential or nursing home.

It is a flexible service and can be used to provide a break to carers (this is called ‘respite’ care) either on a one-off or on a regular basis.

Home care can include:-

Personal care such as help with:-

• Getting in and out of bed
• Use of the toilet
• Getting washed and dressed/undressed
• Eating meals

Support at home providing practical help rather than personal care and includes:-

• Collecting pensions and shopping
• Preparing meals
• Day or night sitting (only in exceptional circumstances)
• Lighting fires
• Essential household hygiene

Home care is provided by paid care staff who visit people in their own homes.  Every one receiving this service will have a Care Plan produced by a social worker and will describe how often care staff will visit; what they will do; and how long it is expected to take.
